TASK FORCE ON THE EUROPEAN UNION

PREVENTION OF MASS ATROCITIES

In January 2012, the Budapest Centre for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities has launched a Task Force on the EU Prevention of Mass Atrocities to contribute to the EU’s continued efforts to translate its general commitment to the responsibility to protect into practice and make the prevention of genocide and mass atrocities a priority of EU foreign policy.

The Task Force is chaired by Professor Christoph O. Meyer (King’s College London) and Professor Karen E. Smith (London School of Economics) and made up of leading European academics, experts and practitioners to produce a ‘Report on EU prevention of Mass Atrocities’, which will be released at a public event in March 2013 and presented directly to the European External Action Service and other key decision makers in EU institutions and Member State governments.

The core aim of the report has been to review the existing tools of the European Union for the prevention of mass atrocities and make recommendations to optimize timely and adequate responses to emerging threats of mass atrocities.

The 70-page report “The EU and the Prevention of Mass Atrocities – An Assessment of Strengths and Weaknesses” was released on the 6th of March 2013 in a public event in Brussels.
